Cashmere Care Steps:
1. Handle with Love (or at Least, Gently)
Cashmere is delicate, so when it’s time to wash, handle it with care. Gently swirl the sweater in cold water with a wool-safe detergent, avoiding any rough scrubbing or wringing. To rinse, lightly press the fabric to release the soapy water, then lay it flat on a towel. Roll the towel with the cashmere inside and press gently to absorb the excess moisture, never twisting or wringing it out. Once most of the water is out, reshape the garment and lay it flat to dry. Your cashmere will stay soft and beautiful for years!
2. Skip the Machine Drama
That washing machine may have a “delicate” cycle, but trust me, it's still too rough for cashmere. Always air dry your cashmere flat, positioning it on a clean towel in a well-ventilated space to allow proper airflow. You can gently hang it just enough to lift the sweater so both sides get airflow, but avoid hanging it completely, as this can stretch the fibers. Never use a dryer, which can cause shrinking and damage. Keep it flat and away from direct heat or sunlight to protect the softness and shape!
3. Fold, Don’t Hang
Want to avoid awkward shoulder bumps and stretching? Always fold your cashmere rather than hanging it. Hanging your sweater, especially for long periods, can cause the fabric to stretch out, particularly in the shoulder area, leading to those unsightly bumps. Over time, the weight of the sweater pulls on the fibers, distorting the shape and causing uneven wear. By folding your cashmere neatly and storing it flat, you’re protecting the delicate fibers from unnecessary strain. This helps your sweater maintain its original shape, softness, and overall quality, ensuring it lasts for many seasons to come. Taking this simple step will prevent unwanted stretching and prolong the life of your cashmere investment!
4. The Fuzzies are Normal
Pilling happens, even to the best of cashmere, and it’s completely normal! Cashmere is made from fine, natural fibers that, with wear and friction, can start to form those tiny little fuzz balls. The softer and finer the fibers, the more prone they are to pilling, especially in areas that experience a lot of friction, like the sleeves or sides. But no worries—this doesn’t mean your cashmere is ruined! Investing in a fabric shaver or a cashmere comb is worth it. These tools are gentle on your delicate knits and will quickly remove the pills, leaving your sweater looking fresh and smooth in seconds. Regularly using one of these tools will keep your cashmere in top condition, ensuring it stays soft and luxurious for years. It’s a small investment that will make a huge difference in keeping your favorite pieces looking brand new!
